This illustration shows the duel of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr in New Jersey on January 11, 1804.
Aaron Burr was Thomas Jefferson's Vice President, but was not happy being part of his administration. Burr blamed rival Alexander Hamilton, the founder of the Federalist Party, for his political difficulties and challenged Hamilton to a duel. Hamilton died the next day.
